Xscape Yorkshire

A local landmark housing family-friendly, all-day leisure activities has helped regenerate an area that previously had one of the highest unemployment rates in the UK.

Xscape Yorkshire is a leisure-led centre, which, along with its sister property in Milton Keynes, is perhaps best known for its Snozone ski and snowboard experience on real snow.

A family day out destination

At Xscape Yorkshire there is a sharp focus on leisure that appeals to the whole family, with attractions including a Cineworld multiplex cinema, indoor adventure golf, laser tag, bowling alley, climbing wall, indoor skate park, maze challenge and soft play area.

Our most recent addition was a Gravity Trampoline Park for the growing number of children and adults that enjoy this high-flying activity.

As with our Milton Keynes property, a Snozone centre is central to the experience and Xscape Yorkshire houses the only indoor ski slope to the east of the Pennines. And it’s an accessible and inclusive venue, with a dedicated ski school, specialist coaches and adaptive equipment for those with disabilities.

To accommodate the ski slope, the building has been designed with a distinctive, angular structure standing 125 ft tall and as a result has become a local landmark, clearly visible from the nearby M62.

Great facilities and helpful staff. Something here for everyone of all ages."

Customer comment, May 2017

To add to the Xscape Yorkshire family experience, visitors have 14 restaurants and cafes to choose from, including Nando’s, Chiquito, TGI Fridays and Bella Italia.

The retail stores, which include Ellis Brigham, Evans Cycles, Trespass and Sweatshop are a perfect accompaniment to the main draw, as they offer clothing and equipment for outdoor and winter sports. This mix of food and drink combined with specialist retail was tried and tested at Xscape Milton Keynes, which opened three years earlier.

The variety of entertainment under one roof is unrivalled in the area and with the ease of access from the motorway or by train at Glasshoughton, Xscape Yorkshire attracts both local families and those further afield seeking a complete entertainment destination.

Regenerating the local area

Xscape Yorkshire’s nearest town, Castleford, is 10 miles south-east of Leeds and was a former mining community.

The local coal mines and a coal-fired power station used to be the major employers in the region but the industry’s decline created significant unemployment. Xscape Yorkshire, which was built on a former open cast mine in 2003, is part of a major regeneration effort that has seen new retail centres and sports facilities open up on what had become a strip of unused land.

Xscape itself provides jobs for over 600 people, and attracts visitors from the Yorkshire region and beyond.

A step forward into leisure

The centre has not only benefitted the local community and provided the wider area with a family leisure destination, our acquisition of X-Leisure in 2012 has been good news for our business too. It was the start of our diversification into the leisure sector and recognition that destinations that deliver great experiences for our customers also deliver great return for our shareholders.
